Fight against mice and rats has begun with human history.
In fact mice and rats have lived close to humans from the very beginning, as human presence meant and keep on meaning something very simple: availability of food. Food brings affection. In other words we could say that mice and rats are somehow very affectionate to us eventhough the feeling has never been shared.
As a matter of fact tricks and devices to keep rodents away are as old as the world itself.
We cannot use any magic pipe to solve the question, as Hamelin dis, however nowadays we have come to more evolved but centainly less pitturesque methods.
To proceed correctly is necessary to get to the bottom of the problem removing all those factors that favour rodents territorialize a determined area with water, food storages and safe holes presence. The very first step to begin with at every battle with rodents consists in individualize these factors.
On the other side if the infestation has come to an acute stage already, and a rapid solution becomes extremely necessary, rodent-killing baits represent a possible way out.
Most rodent-killing baits are based on anticoagulant active principles; the first generation of these anticoagulants called Warfarin, Coumatetratyl, Clorfacinone were based on a douple dose whereas new generation products like Difenacoum, Bromadiolone, Brodifacoum and Flocoumafen become effective after one and only ingestion, even though synthomps may arise after a few days.
In case of resistance to anticoagulant products is possible to resort to different based rodent killing products as Calciferolo for example, that has a quicker effect. However, on the other hand, this option may produce a sort of mistrust in rodents that may eat smaller not-deadly portions of baits. In these cases is therefore necessary to make the so-called “pre-soliciting” which consist in putting food with no poison for a short period of time. Once rodents have overcome any kind of suspiciousness regarding food offered is then possible to put baits filled with acute poison.
In order to protect baits from deterioration there are dispensers that protect them from all those factors that may damage them (atmospheric agents, dirt etc).
The posts’ number to put into the infestated area can be various. As Mr. Alberto Baseggio (India) says “ In an infested building should be put around 2 or 3 posts every 100 squared meters”.
Bait dispensers should not be put too close to food storages used by rodents, instead they should be put along the way between these, holes and water supply places.
How much bait should we use? If we decide to use first generation anticoagulants is recommended to put a larger quantity ( around 100-200 grams). On the other side if we decide to use the second generation ones the quantity of bait to use can be smaller (50-100 grams).
In order to lay out the most proper treatment for our situation is necessary to make a note of all the information we have and need.
This means having: a site map with all the bait posts marked down, the indications regarding the product we have decided to use and the active principle on which it is based on, plus, in addiction, all other informations that may come useful to our situation, says Baseggio “As for inspections, in the beginning they should be made every 3-4 days and they can be reduced only once baits consumption has reduced as well.
Usually it takes around 2 or 3 weeks to come to a complete deratization, even thought sometimes it can take up to five weeks to come to a complete result.
Both public and private sectors have to face this problems; this means that, depending on different economical possibilities, there is a large range of action.
There are interesting examples.
As alberto Baseggio says the office USSL in Adria, a town in the Veneto region, has conduced a case study centred on the number of posts associated to the baits’ consumption over the time. This study has shown that there are two main moments over the year when is recommended to take action: at the end of summer and between spring and the beginning of summer. These are the moments when is suggested to take action against rodents, even over a different number of times.
Mayor of Venice Massimo Cacciari has suggested that should be private sector to take over the solution of rodents problem. In fact public sector cannot have an effective action over all the areas touched by this problem. Therefore it should be an initiative of the single shop owner, restaurant owner etc. to take care and solve the problem, if it is present.
In this field there is still a sort of waiting athmosphere regarding the actualization of the poison Directive by the government.
Rodent-killing products are the first active principles that are going to be taken into consideration and during the following months results should be seen. The level of usage of rat killers is also a topic of this discussion. The point of view of Federico Guanzini ( Copyr) is clear about this:” at this point various opportunities can be open to the disinfestor that will become the qualified reference point where to ask to in case of rodents infestations”.
There are a lot of questions that are still not answered yet but that will be by the end of the year: as for now all we can do is wait for a clearer line of action and intervention.
In the meantime business facing the market are generally satisfied by demand of this sector. Vebi as made of the fight against rodents its point of power and as Nicola Lora says “ We have much satisfaction from the lines of paraffined blocks which are practical and reliable. Even thought it took a binding capital equipment investment in order to reduce the level of paraffined food and improve the desirability of the product, results have been more than positive. In fact while fresh paste is becoming more and more likable for rats and mice, paraffined one is getting more and more welcomed thanks to the advantages it gives.
Eventhough it can’t be denied that fresh paste always offers great attractiveness meeting refined tastes of rodents which prefers non-manipulated high-quality products.

It is a system based on ultrasounds that finds an effective position in eletrical plants, both in private and public sectors intended for large public business like Enel, railways, highway agencies, electrical cabs etc.
